The DeWalt 20V XR 3” cut-off tool is, without a doubt, a mighty little beast. Capable of chewing through the toughest material with the ferocity of a hungry tiger, the DeWalt DCS438B is a force to be reckoned with. That’s not to say that there isn’t strong competition for the title of best 3-inch cut-off tool.
There can be no denying that the DeWalt XR logo carries a huge deal of prestige. Along with Milwaukee Fuel and Makita XGT, XR is probably one of the most recognized acronyms in the cordless power tool world.
For most, the deliberation usually comes down to Milwaukee vs DeWalt. This is not a debate I wish to enter in this review. While I will always sway toward DeWalt XR and FlexVolt tools, I have the utmost respect for all the other top power tool brands. In particular, Milwaukee, Makita, and Bosch.
However, this is a review of the DeWalt DCS438 and I’ll be focusing my attention entirely on the merits of this truly remarkable 3-inch cut-off tool. Looking at both the pros and cons, I can only conclude that it is, arguably, king of the hill when it comes to professional grade, super powerful, cordless cutting tools for a variety of materials.

The most noteworthy attribute that the DeWalt 3-inch cutoff tool has to offer is most definitely its incredible power. With 550 watts maximum output, it has the nuts to cut through a variety of materials with absolute ease. These include tile, metal, drywall or fiber cement, plastic, and stone.
The brushless XR motor is one of DeWalt’s greatest achievements. Although brushless motor technology is not unique to DeWalt cordless tools, they are amongst the best. Apart from improved performance, brushless motors last longer and don’t require maintenance. There are no brushes to replace.
The XR system is not just about power and durability, it also utilizes clever computer controls which maximize battery life whilst ensuring you always have the power needed for the situation at hand. Reaching a maximum speed of 20,000 RPM, the DeWalt cut-off tool will constantly adjust the output power to save energy when all that power is not needed and automatically ramping up the power when things get tough.
As is the way of DeWalt, ease of use is exceptional. No tools are required to adjust the shoe for an accurate depth of cut, with measurements in both inches and millimeters. The Hex tool for removing and fitting wheels is stored on the machine, and it has an arbor lock. The LED light is also a great plus factor, illuminating the work area for improved visibility in poor lighting conditions.
The forward and reverse mode at the flip of a switch means that you can alter the wheel direction to ensure that sparks and debris always move away from you. This is wonderful for user safety and general comfort. When speaking of comfort, the beautifully designed handle, with generous padding, also deserves a mention.
Dust extraction is taken care of using the DeWalt AirLock system, which is one of the very best, and easiest to use. Finally, The DeWalt DCS438 is compatible with their Tool Connect system which allows busy contractors to track and monitor their tools.
