There can be no tool more versatile, or popular, than a drill/Driver. From the most basic of DIY needs to the busiest contractor, a cordless drill/driver is our most relied upon power tool. Kits that include a good drill/driver, with the most common bits and accessories are the best value options. There are plenty of great kits available. So how do you know if you’re getting genuine value? We’ve done hours of research to help you get the best bang for your buck when buying a drill/driver kit.

Our research has shown that the most popular drill/drivers, with an amazing variety of various kit options, are DeWalt and Black & Decker kits. DeWalt 20V MAX cordless tools are a good value deal in the higher quality market. Black & Decker are the best value for the homeowner, weekend warrior,  and entry level contractor requirements. Ironically, the DeWalt brand is part of the Stanley Black & Decker group. It seems as though these guys have the lion’s share of the market.

Being the most popular brand, doesn’t mean you’re the best. Though it does imply that you’re offering something that people want. After analyzing what’s available, I believe that DeWalt offer the greatest amount of options, at really good prices. I’ve always been of the opinion that, if you’re going to buy cheap power tools, you can’t go wrong with Black & Decker. Both brands have a long standing reputation and that counts for a lot.

There is an almost endless range of drill/driver kits available, from so many different brands. Some better known than others. It wasn’t easy to compile a list of the best value drill/driver kits, but I think we’ve nailed it.

Firstly, we’ve stuck to two brands that are known to be good value. Then we looked at what you’re getting for your money. That would be the quality of the drill/driver, it has to do what you want it to. Then we took a look at the bits and accessories that are included in the price. Are these useful items? Do they actually add any value? After much deliberation, these are the products that we feel are the best value drill/driver kits:

Review:

The DeWalt Drill/Driver and screwdriving kit is the most expensive product in this review. This should come as no surprise. Prices, when comparing DeWalt vs Black & Decker, is like comparing Cadillac to Chevrolet. In this scenario, DeWalt is obviously the Cadillac. As a devoted DeWalt fan, I’m always happy to pay a bit extra for their products. In the long run, it’s money well-spent.

I like the DeWalt DCD771C2 drill/driver, mostly for the excellent value for money aspect, and the fact that it uses the 20V MAX battery which can also be used with around 180+ DeWalt cordless tools. However, it is not the best cordless drill/Driver in the extensive DeWalt 20V MAX lineup. Although more expensive, my top choice for a compact drill/driver would be the DeWalt 20V MAX XR (DCD7091). If you’re not aware of the difference between DeWalt 20V MAX vs DeWalt 20V MAX XR, this article will be worth reading: DeWalt 20V MAX XR ǀ Brushless vs Brushed Motor.

To paraphrase the essentials when comparing DeWalt 20V MAX vs XR, it’s mostly about efficiency. The standard DeWalt 20V MAX tools aren’t as powerful as their XR counterparts. They are not as efficient either. DeWalt XR tools provide longer working times between battery recharging as a result. These tools are, however, more expensive. Since this is a review of the best value drill/driver kits, the regular old 20V MAX drill/driver is going to save some money and it is a really great little machine. There can be no comparison between the cheaper 20V MAX DeWalt tools and the cheap equivalents from other brands. Even if the brushed motor technology is old-school, and not the best, this is a DeWalt tool. You know what you’re getting. Excellent performance for its class and extreme durability.

When we take a good look at the specs, the DeWalt DCD771C2 is actually quite remarkable for the technology it uses. With 300 Unit Watts Out (UWO) it is actually more powerful than many corded drills which are larger and heavier than this little bombshell. It has, as I’ve come to rely on from DeWalt, an immaculate trigger switch. You have absolute speed control from 0 – 450 RPM on the low setting, which is great for better control when driving screws into soft material, or 0 – 1,500 RPM for high-power drilling.

The ½” keyless chuck is easy to use and doesn’t slip when extra torque is needed. The clutch has 16 settings, providing excellent torque control for the ratchet stop. The bright LED light is a great convenience. Having an LED work light on a cordless drill/driver is not a novel idea. These days, even the cheapest drills (and similar power tools) include this useful feature. Though very are as bright as this one, making it much more functional and not just an add-on gimmick.

This kit includes the ultra-tough DeWalt carrying bag, 2 X compact 1.3AH 20V MAX batteries, and a charger. I think these small batteries are the best for a compact drill/driver. The smaller size and lower weight make it easier to use the tool in tight spaces. A drill/driver of this size doesn’t use heaps of power, so the battery time isn’t too bad.

The screwdriving kit that is included in this deal is also exceptional. Many of the screwdriver bits are double-ended. This 45-piece kit actually provides you with 54 screwdriver tips as result. In addition to the top-quality hardened steel screwdriver bits, you also get the magnetic driver guide. Versatility is enhanced by including Phillips and flat screwdriver bits with a longer shank. To top it off, the DeWalt ToughCase has also been included. This is one of the best accessory storage systems I’ve seen. It is, true to its name, super tough. This is a modular system and can linked or conveniently stacked with any of the other ToughCase storage solutions. Ultimately practical and convenient.

Even though the Black & Decker drill/driver kits in the reviews to follow are quite a bit cheaper than this one, I rate the DeWalt DCD771C2 and  DW2166 Screwdriving Kit as the number one choice. We cannot underestimate the value that the DeWalt brand brings to the table. For DeWalt quality, and top-rated customer service, this drill/driver kit is unbeatable value all the way.

Review:

For the average dad’s toolbox, the DeWalt drill/driver kit (reviewed above) may cost more than what the average dad is prepared to spend. If you’re the kind of guy that likes do a bit of DIY on the weekends, the Black and Decker drill/driver, plus 30-piece accessory kit, could be the perfect fit. It’s certainly affordable and is undoubtedly excellent value.

Of the cheaper cordless drill/drivers, the Black & Decker LD120 is the one I’d choose. It is not going to fully match up to the DeWalt DCD771C2 cordless drill/driver. The Black & Decker drill/driver is not as powerful as the DeWalt machine, nor is it as efficient, so you can’t expect the same battery working times. Since this is a much cheaper cordless drill/driver, one wouldn’t really expect it to be a true rival for the likes of DeWalt. I reckon, for most DIY projects, you won’t find the Black and Decker LD120 lacking. It drills and drives screws into wood, plastic, and metal better than most cheap alternatives. It is also of a quality standard that, if used as intended, can hold up to the more prestigious brands.

The Black & Decker LD120 has a pretty amazing 24 settings for the clutch, making it one of the best for driving lightweight screws into soft materials. The trigger switch is good, but you can’t expect the same level of control as the DeWalt drill. This one has a single power setting for 0 – 750 RPM. The ³/₈” keyless chuck is perfectly suited for the light to medium duty workload that this drill/driver is designed to perform. I wouldn’t try drilling large holes into hard material with this machine. That’s not what it’s designed to do. On the other hand, this is no Mickey Mouse drill either. With 300 in-LBS torque you have the power for general drilling without overworking the plucky little Black & Decker.

Like the LD120 drill/driver, the accessory kit that comes with it is not for heavy-duty work. The selection of screwdriver bits, and a few sockets for nuts and bolts, is quite extensive. Really great for the price. I can’t see that the casual DIYer would need much more than this. At the very least, it’s a great starer-pack. You can always buy additional accessories as the need arises.

When all is said and done, the Black & Decker LD120 drill/driver with 30-pices accessory kit is about the best value you’ll find. It also includes a single 20V MAX battery and charger, even more bang for your buck. It is one of the most popular kits of its kind. It’s just the thing that most homeowners want in their garage and makes a wonderful gift for dads, brothers, and significant others.

Review:

This is a fairly basic kit for the home and can always be extended by purchasing additional accessories that can be used with a ³/₈” chuck. The great news is that this kit costs less than $50. If all you’re really looking for is a good drill/driver for basic home DIY, this is a fantastic deal, with 10 drill bits thrown in for some extra value. Anyone who enjoys a good bargain can’t ignore this.

The Black & Decker LDX120C is the junior 20V MAX model. While it can just about match the LD120 (reviewed above) in terms of power, it is a simpler, slightly less accomplished drill/driver. The most significant difference being an 11-position clutch vs the more expensive model with a 20-position clutch. Given how cheap this drill/driver is, I wouldn’t see this as a big deal. For general DIY, this drill/driver is perfectly adequate.

The 10-piece drill bit set is, like the drill/driver it accompanies, not heavy-duty. They’re fine for soft metal and plastic. Though they won’t last long if you’re drilling hard metal. I see this more as a little bonus. An additional item, along with a fantastically cheap drill/driver. Basically, some extra value to an already sweet deal.

Just because the Black & Decker LDXC120C is a wonderfully cheap 20V drill/driver, I wouldn’t write it off as junk. It should outlast many that cost more. This is true value, good quality at a great price. The drill bit kit doesn’t add heaps of value. However, the combined deal is just so well-priced that it’s almost irresistible.

Review:

Do you see assembling an IKEA kit as the full extent of home improvement and DIY? Perhaps the odd shelf, hanging pictures, and such? Then you probably don’t need a high-powered drill/driver. A lighter, easier to use tool might be more to your liking. The good news is that you don’t need to spend much for a comprehensive drill/driver kit for projects like this. The Black & Decker BDCD8C 8V drill/driver and BDA42SD (42-pc) bit kit costs around 40 bucks; and will provide with all you need for the basic tasks I’ve mentioned.

Let’s be clear from the outset, the Black & Decker BDCD8C is a light-duty 8V cordless drill/driver. It’s not the type of tool that you’d readily find on a construction site. I don’t mean that this little machine isn’t up to some hard work. It’s just not that powerful. Drilling into stud walls, soft wood, and plastic is no problem for the 8V Black & Decker. It will drive most size screws into these materials too. If this is all you need, then I couldn’t think of a better tool.

Because it is lightweight, and blissfully compact, you don’t need to be a master to use the baby in the Black & Decker lineup. The BDCD8C utilizes a keyless chuck, so you can insert bits in a flash and there’s no chuck key to go missing. It has a simple, easy to use trigger switch, and a superb grip with an excellent weight balance. This drill/driver is designed to make it easier for less skilled DIYers to achieve pro results.

The 42-piece screwdriver set is amazing for the price. Good quality, in the light-duty class. Actually, it’s quite incredible quality in this context. A really great selection of bits, in all shapes and sizes, are included for many types of assembly projects. The top-quality magnetic driver guide means no frustration when lining up screws. A box is provided to keep all the bits organized and safely stored. It’s not the type of plastic storage box I’d lug around every day in a toolbox. If your tools never leave the home, this is fine. Though it’s not a DeWalt-style contractors storage system.

I know so many people who would appreciate such a nimble, easy to use drill/driver. The Black & Decker BDCD8C is the novice tool-user’s dream machine. The BDA42SD Screwdriver Bit Set catapults this kit into the realm of extreme value. Think about it. A quality tool (and additional driver kit) from a know brand for $40 and some small change. Where will you find a better value deal than this?
